The History of ExCel London

The following is quick rundown of ExCel London’s history which begins in the mid 19th century:

  • 1855: the Royal Victoria Dock site is planted at a trading post. Prince Albert opened it for the ships to dock and unload the international trade. It would go on to become the site for ExCel London
  • 1921: King George V re-opens the docks after long inactivity. The constant trading activities and growing scale have made the Royal Docks the largest on-land docks in the present world.
  • 1945: The Second World War saw destruction and declining economic activity. The enemy targeted the docks, turning them into rubble and debris, which would take decades to overcome.
  • 1981: the Docks closed again because the cargo traffic and manufacturing plants started to shift. The trend occurred due to the increasing cost of operating near the river.
  • 1986: London City Airport began construction.
  • 1988: Ray Moxley was chosen by the Association of Exhibition Organisers to identify and design a new trading and exhibition building. He was specifically requested to erect a building close to the M25. A site for the Royal Victoria Dock was reserved two years later, in 1990.
  • 2000: ExCel London's grand opening was in November 22 years ago. It was recognised as the largest regeneration project in Europe and the Islands. The building was exemplary with attention to detail and specific parameters to satisfy future requirements
  • 2020: ExCel London became a lifesaver when it was turned into the NHS Nightingale. The growing coronavirus infection was burdening the hospitals. Therefore, ExCel London acted as a temporary hospital, hosting patients in the global fight against the pandemic.
